Worldwide cases now reduced to 1600 per annum It is over 28 years since the last case of Polio in the UK but many still remember this horrific, crippling sometimes fatal childhood disease. In 2010 Polio, a disease for which there is no cure, is still however a harrowing reality for children in Africa and Asia. As a result of a Polio immunization campaign the annual number of Polio cases has dramatically reduced from 350,000 cases in 15 countries in 1985 to only 1600 cases in 4 countries (Afghanistan, Northern India, Nigeria and Pakistan) last year. Rotary International and Rotary clubs have been a driving force in this campaign since 1985 and this month Rotary Clubs throughout the UK together with Tesco will be collecting money to further advance the fight against Polio. Members of the Rotary Club of Windsor St George and Windsor & Eton will be collecting at Tesco in Windsor on Saturday 27th February. Each £1 raised will pay for 5 children to be immunised against Polio and will continue the onward march towards total eradication of Polio. A Polio-free world could just be round the corner Carol Buckland, President of Windsor St George Rotary Club and the local event coordinator said: “We are absolutely delighted to be working with Tesco staff and thank them for their enthusiastic support” “Every penny raised will go towards the continuing efforts to destroy this horrible disease. Eradication of Polio would be a dream come true and would be only the second time in history, after smallpox, that we have managed to totally eradicate a disease” |

Shout out to sporty diabetics
By W'hamCopywriter
Hi all,
Are you a type 1 diabetic, or do you know anyone who is?
With my journalist hat on, I write regularly for a diabetes health/lifestyle magazine. I'm always looking for sporty Type 1 diabetics to interview for the lifestyle pages.
Any sport, any level, any age: the only must-haves are Type 1 diabetes and an active interest in a particular sport.
Please get in touch if this describes you or someone you know.
Thanks! Nicola

Childhood Obesity - Child Abuse?
By Mission4Nutrition
You may have read yesterday and seen on the TV that a seriously obese family in Scotland had their 7 children (including a 2-day old baby) taken into care, citing Child Abuse. Is having a family of obese children "child neglect or abuse" when on the same day it is widely reported in the media that a man has been allowed to reach the astonishing weight of 70stones? I'd be interested in your thoughts.
