Is user generated media killing our culture and the economy?

by Jon Davey on 18th Nov 2009 | View all blogs by Jon Davey
Yesterday evening on BBC 3’s “It’s Only a Theory” programme Andrew Keen, an internet entrepreneur who found Audio Cafe in 1996 offered up the theory that “User generated media is killing our culture and the economy”.

It’s Only a Theory – Episode 7

He offered up that blogs, twitter, youtube, etc are making us all narcissistic. We all think we are stars, we’re all experts and we’re all FREE!

Add to this a crisis of mainstream media, not buying papers, not buying books, downloading music ... even porn! There is no exchange of monetary value and this has a direct impact on the economy.

I’d suggest that you might want to take a look at the show and consider his points ...

It’s Only a Theory – Episode 7

Also those presented by Dr George McGavin relating to the bees.

I have to say this is one of the best TV shows I have seen on the box lately and it should be aired on BBC to enable more people to join in the conversation

What's your opinion on this as a "social media" person?

i think that each online community, social media site, network, whatever you want to call it defines itself by the management team

if they want to be heavy handed then those with the opposite opinion will be pushed / bullied away and that community will become known to have a strong leaning towards x ... it will then attract people who agree and love x ... it will then be sponsored by those whose target market is the perfect X !

when i researched the guy above further he was writing a book and selling it on amazon ... so a spot of motivation for him

check history ... Murdock and Microsoft might be doing a Cleopatra Caesar rap! not sure of the detail but they were on different empire building teams and came together for fame and fortune ... history repeating itself but with different empires combing to beat a mortal foe GOOGLE !!

i think there will be millions of social networks around the world all with a specific focus ... the number of people who work for each will be directly determined by the audiences willingness to pay membership and or sponsors looking at a target market ... without money it is not a business but a hobby site ... natural selection will determine which are which ...

So yes things are changing but it was ever thus ...

Actually the important bit of that show was the bees ...
